pyFGe spatial

The pyFGE model has also been used to calculate critical wind speeds for a wider area. Model input is derived from forest inventory maps based on aerial photograph interpretation and a digital terrain model. Due to the coarse resolution of the stand classification uncertainties of the model output are significant at the stand level. However, such calculations are still valuable at the landscape level and can be support decision making at a more strategic level.

To overcome the resolution limitations the model was run a large number of times while the input parameters where changed within predefined intervals. The data analysis was then performed at the landscape level rather than at the stand level.

The study area is located in Quebec, Canada, about 550 km north-east of Québec City. The stands are old growth and the two dominating tree species are Balsam fir (65%) (Abies balsamea) and Black spruce (34%) (Picea mariana).
